Theory

Architecture is about reimagining and breaking contemporary bounds of movement and the natural, it allows us to construct a vessel which can capture the ephemeral qualities of light through the use of glass and skylights.

Source of Key Words

"The project is made to draw on the ephermeral qualities of northern environments that celebrate historic and contemporary Inuit art and culture...
An expansive, light-filled Inuit Gallery on the building's third level provides 8,500 square fee of open flexible space dedicated to the display of Inuit art. Figural skylights in the ceiling suffuse the gallery with light from the broad spectrum of the sky creating an illumination that focuses the viewer on the Inuit Art in the gallery."

Axonometrics

These axonometrics are the experimentation of mixing solid and hollow objects, investigating how movement can be generated both inside and around the conceptual bounds. All limbs of the architectural building move about its core, emphasised by a singular main corridor in each axonometric which distinctively draws the viewers attention.

Animations

The following animated Axonometrics explore the idea of transforming ordinary shapes into spaces that invigorate unconventional movement throughtout a building. In addition to this, the hollowing of the block's centre, and upper face starts to investigate a medium for light to permeate inside.

Custom Textures

Textures become the skin of a building, coating each face with a concept and idea that the architect wishes to accentuate. In a process of developing a sense of movement and change in atmosphere and light, I investigated the affects of natural and unnatural phenomena which alter the way we perceive the world around us.

Rain

Rain is a beautiful natural change that often results in refraction and reflection of light about its surface. When it trickles down a surface, it changes its shape and moves light along with it.

Burst

Burst is often associated with explosions which give off energy and light. It can be harnessed to fill the night sky with colour but also to push or collapse structures.

 Linear

Lines are the building blocks of a building, it determines the height, width and length, but also influences the way we move in a structure.

Rotation

Rotation allows us to percieve our surroundings at different angles, encouraging us to turn around and explore.

Scalar

Scalar plays with the shapes and sizes of objects, it influences how we percieve distance.

Zoom

Zoom can be used as a sound or to describe something fast, however, it can also be used to influence the speed or even the direction we move.

In trying to invigorate a sense of movement in the details of my model, I selected the following three textures which both complimented its structure, and accentuated this concept.

The linear element texture applied as a window ornament is used to inspire students to think outside the box, move around and investigate the dimensions of the building.

Complimenting the circular shape of the staircase, this rotation texture invites us to explore our surroundings before heading into the building.

Accompanying the design of the main corridor, this zoom texture urges us to move quickly from one end to the other. However, it also draws to our attention our surroundings, by doing so we explore how light has a unique influence in each space.

The Moving Elements

Moving Element 1:

In this scene, a skylight window opens, allowing light to illuminated and fill the building lobby.

Moving Element 2:

In this scene, as the camera moves throughout the building, sliding doors shift along with the camera to emphasise the concept that the main corridor is the centre of movement within the architecture.

The Plan

Inspiration was take from Zaha Hadid's architectural plan for The Peak Leisure Club. The intricacy of combining many different unconventional shapes into one structure encouraged active thinking of its affect upon being exposed to lighting. Hence, the architecture of my building uses changing elements of shapes and openings to vessel the ephemeral sense of light.

The Architecture

The architecture of this school aims to reinvent the use of space and its surroundings, being perched as a bridge between the Square House and the New College Postgraduate Village Building. The main facade in the image below demonstrates how a building can be shaped to capture light and inspire movement in unconventional ways.

Site Overview

Outdoor Balcony/ Bridge to Squarehouse

Not only is this school a bridge between two sides of a road, the building in itself is a focus upon the importance of connection and movement. The main corridor that spans the entire length of the school acts as a bridge between all of its spaces. To compliment this, the use of a linear texture along the second floor balcony emphasises the movement of many points towards a single core.

Corridor

Moving further into the building, the natural element of light flickers and changes throughout the day, illuminating the spaces within the building. By manipulating the shape of the building into a vessel, light can enter and fill each space creating unique ephemeral environments.

Lobby

Architecture is not only be limited to creating a sense of movement or capturing light, it can also be harnessed to slow and calm, allowing us to appreciate the atmosphere around us. The following images of the courtyard enhance this effect by adding colour to the building.

Courtyard/ Library

The curved facade at the other end of the building refracts the lighting creating an empheral atmosphere. The libraries smooth glass surface and location next to nature filled courtyard encourages calmness and tranquility as students study or rest in the area.

 Back Facade

Leading up to the entrance of the lobby area are a set of curved stairs which urge us to climb up unconventionally. The twisting pattern of the rotation texture further inspires us to turn around and observe the building and surroundings at different angles.

The Developed Stair

Concept Statement

This model, resembling the shape of an hourglass, plays with the delicate yet dangerous nature of 'Time'. Its round smooth walls are complimented by the rhymical clockwork movement of the staircase at its core. However, like 'Time', each progressive tread does not wait for its guest, one misstep may lead to an undesired ending. As Day and Night mark the movement of 'Time', its watchers remain entranced with awe.
